The studio

Est. 2000. Rebuilt 2026. Same name, same standards, new physics.

Atomic Wax is a one-person studio on purpose. This page is the story of why it existed, why it stopped, and why it's back, told plainly, because that's the house style.

Chapter one · 2000–2012

The original run.

Atomic Wax started in 2000 as a design and production studio for business owners and communications executives: the people responsible for how a company speaks to the world. For twelve years the job was the same at its core: take something that communicates badly and make it communicate beautifully, on time, without drama.

Then the web's plumbing got complicated. For a decade, doing websites properly meant either an agency invoice or a compromise: page builders, plugin stacks, template themes, monthly patching, and that specific dread when an update breaks the homepage on a Friday. Hundreds of business sites got built in those years by the person behind this studio, on the platforms everyone used, and the pattern never changed: the sites aged badly, the costs never ended, and the owners slowly stopped believing websites could be good.

Chapter two · 2026

The plumbing changed. So we came back.

In 2026, a new generation of tools (the kind used by the largest sites on the internet, now within reach of a small studio) made it possible to build sites that load instantly, cost almost nothing to run, and don't rot. Just as important: new ways of working let one senior craftsperson deliver what used to take a floor of people. The economics that made good websites a luxury broke, in your favour.

So the old name came off the shelf. Atomic Wax is back to doing what it always did, making businesses communicate beautifully, with tools that finally match the ambition. And because trust is earned in public, we're rebuilding our own sites first and publishing the results, numbers and all, in Field Notes.

Proof, not promises

The first two builds are already live: thelingerieshoppe.ca, a bilingual national directory of 110 boutiques, and aibubblequestion.com, a fifteen-page research project. Both fully static, edge-served, running themselves. Visit either and feel the speed; read the launch notes in Field Notes.

The person

One pair of hands. That's the point.

Peter Benes. Designer by training and temperament, builder of hundreds of business websites, a Shopify Select Partner, and the sole pair of hands on your project. When you hire Atomic Wax, the person who quotes the work does the work. No account managers relaying messages, no junior team learning on your invoice, no telephone game.

Parallel to the studio, Peter runs Benes the Menace, a retail ecommerce consultancy for independent shop owners, which is why the advice here tends to sound like it comes from someone who has personally spent money on ads, read the analytics, and stood behind a counter. Because it does.

One more thing worth knowing about the model: almost everyone else in this market earns more when your website stays complicated. Hosts, care plans, and retainer agencies bill monthly against that complexity. We get paid once, to remove it. When your finished site needs nothing and no one, that's not our lost revenue; that's the deal working as designed.

The fair question: what if he's hit by a bus?

A finished rebuild doesn't need us: nothing to patch, nothing on retainer, everything documented and in your name, on open technology any developer can maintain. One person builds it; no person is required to keep it alive. The longer answer is here.

What that means for you

Different chairs, same good news.

If you own the business

One accountable person, a fixed quote, and a site that stops being a line item you resent. You'll always know exactly who to call, because it's always the same person.

If you run the marketing

A designer-led rebuild that protects the brand, a modern editor you'll actually enjoy, and pages built to show up in search and in AI answers, which is where your next customers are already asking.

If you mind the money

Hosting measured in dollars, not hundreds. No maintenance retainer, because there's nothing to maintain. The rebuild pays for itself in cancelled subscriptions sooner than you'd think.

The next step

Let's look at your site together.

The assessment is free, requires no call, and ends with a written plan and a fixed price, whether you build with us or not.
