Build one: The Lingerie Shoppe, a national directory that runs itself
The first site in our rebuild-our-own-properties-first program is live: thelingerieshoppe.ca, a bilingual national directory of independent Canadian lingerie boutiques. The kind that take fit seriously: proper bra fitting, post-surgical care, genuinely extended sizing.
What it is
A directory is a stress test disguised as a simple site. This one carries 110 boutique listings across 65 cities in all 10 provinces, in English and French, every listing needing its own page, its own local-search presence, and its own reason to load fast on a phone in a parking lot.
It's built exactly the way we'd build yours: Astro generating fully static pages, content managed in EmDash, everything served from Cloudflare's edge network. No plugin stack. No maintenance schedule. Nothing that needs patching on a Friday night.
Why a directory, of all things
Because it proves the parts of the pitch that are hardest to take on faith. "It loads instantly" is easy to claim for a five-page brochure site. A 100-plus-page bilingual directory that loads instantly, costs almost nothing to host, and gets edited through a login rather than a developer: that's the claim with weight on it.
And because a directory never stops changing. Boutiques open, close, move, and update their hours. If the editing workflow were painful, we'd be the first to suffer. That's the point of eating our own cooking.
What we're measuring
This is a launch note, not a victory lap, so here's what goes on the scoreboard as the data accumulates: real-world load times on mobile networks, Google Search Console impressions and clicks as the directory earns its search presence, hosting costs per month next to what an equivalent WordPress build would bill, and the hours it actually takes to keep the content current.
Those numbers will publish here as follow-up notes, sourced from Search Console and the hosting invoices. Measured, not promised. That's the house rule.
